Step-by-step guide:

Before you begin: Be sure to save all work and plug device in to an electrical power source.

Step 1: Determine the current version of Windows on your desktop or laptop device.

  • To identify your current version, in the Windows Search field in the lower left search 'winver'. If Windows Search is not visible, enter Windows Key + S.
  • View pop up window for version. In the image below, we see user's device is on Version 1709. This is an old version and needs updating to version 20H2 (proceed to Step 2). Other versions you may see here: Version 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004 - any of these need updating to Version 20H2.
  • If you see Version 20H2, you are on the current version and do not need to take any further steps at this time.

Step 2: Update to current version

If your version does not match Version 20H2 you must perform this update. To do so, type in Search and Click 'Check for Updates'. When you are ready to start the update process, click "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update". This will search the Windows update page to begin downloading and activating the update. Allow the update process to complete before proceeding.

Step 3: Log in and check if the version update is complete.

Repeat Step 1 to confirm current version. If the 20H2 version is not reflected here, additional action is required. Check below for steps to fix or contact helpdesk@clarkson.edu.

When processes are complete, you may see a Fix Issues message displayed. This is common when updating from older versions. Click the Fix Issues button to proceed.  If issues persist, contact helpdesk@clarkson.edu.
